American Idol Runner-Up John Foster Pays Tribute to Toby Keith
During the American Idol finale in May 2025, 19-year-old contestant John Foster honored the late Toby Keith with a powerful rendition of his patriotic anthem “Courtesy of the Red, White and Blue.” John ultimately placed second that season, a finish that helped launch his rising career in country music.
Just one month later, John made his Grand Ole Opry debut in June, returning several times since while also touring across the United States. His momentum has only continued to grow as he blends new opportunities with heartfelt tributes to his late hero.
Honoring Toby Keith in Oklahoma
Most recently, John traveled to Norman, Oklahoma, to perform at the Toby Keith Foundation’s Schooner Fall Classic. The multi-day event welcomed over a dozen women’s collegiate golf teams at the Belmar Golf Club. Proceeds benefited the Toby Keith Foundation’s OK Kids Korral, which provides a home-away-from-home for children battling cancer and their families during treatment.
Before performing at the event on September 19, John took time to visit Toby Keith’s burial site. He shared photos of the gravestone, which features an engraving resembling an American flag draped across the stone, along with an image of Toby and his wife, Tricia. John captioned the photos: “It’s an absolute honor to take the stage tonight in Norman, OK for Toby Keith’s amazing foundation. We were also honored to spend a quiet moment at the legend’s resting place—a reminder of the incredible legacy he left behind.”
“Don’t Let the Old Man In” — A Song of Legacy
As part of his tribute, John performed “Don’t Let the Old Man In” for Toby’s wife, Tricia, and daughter, Krystal. Before beginning, John shared how deeply he connected to the song, calling it “powerful” from the first time he heard it. His tender acoustic cover moved the family to tears as they lowered their heads, visibly emotional throughout the performance.
When the song ended, Tricia applauded and told John he did a good job — a gesture that made the moment all the more heartfelt. Many believe Toby himself would have been proud of the performance.

The Story Behind the Song
“Don’t Let the Old Man In” was originally written by Toby Keith after a conversation with Clint Eastwood, who later featured the song in his 2018 film The Mule. Its message of resilience and defiance against aging struck a chord with millions, and it became one of Toby’s most meaningful works.
Toby Keith’s Final Televised Performance
In September 2024, the People’s Choice Country Awards honored Toby with the Country Icon Award. During the ceremony, he performed “Don’t Let the Old Man In” in what would become his final televised performance. With his stomach cancer diagnosis public since 2021, the song carried a poignant weight that brought the audience to tears. Toby passed away just five months later.
